Adding Shots

Overview

Adding shots is the most important and time consuming part of the breakdown process. It is also the most creative part of the process. Essentially you want to capture your creativity.

Don’t expect to get a complete shot list the first time through. The best way to approach shots is to read the scene and visualize it in your head. Then describe the images that you see. Try to keep track of things that you imagine from the same angle and position, or point of view.

Keep in mind that you may shoot the entire scene from one camera position, but later edit in different angles, to break up the scene. Don’t create a new shot each time you return to the same camera position. Assume that any shot will last the length of the scene and be edited in post.

The other thing to keep in mind is that it is an iterative process. Get a few shots defined, print them off, and discuss them with the rest of the crew. That dialog will spark idea for different shot, or refine the ones you already have.
