Glossary

Slugline: The first line of a scene in a script. The general or specific location and time that the scene takes place. 

Script Day: For continuity purposes the Script Day records the number of days in the story from when it started. If on day 3 a character gets a cut, the cut should still be there on day 4 and 5).

Master Shot: The viewpoint of a scene in which the relationships between subjects are clear and the entire dramatic action could be understood if no other shots were used.

Reaction Shot: In a dialog scene the shot of a player listening while another player's voice continues on the sound track.

Detail Shot: A tighter, more highly magnified version of the close-up used to show a fragment of a whole subject or a small object in its entirety.

Establishing Shot: Typically a long shot at the beginning of a scene designed to inform viewers of a change in location and to orient them to the general mood and relative placement of subjects in the scene.

Coverage Shot: An alternate viewpoint to the Master Shot, used to ensure that a logical sequence can be cut together during editing.

Live Action: A shot using live actors and/or physical props performing in front of a camera. 

CG (Computer Generated): A shot, prop or set entirely comprised of computer generated imagery.

Rotoscoping: Visual effects added to piece of footage frame by frame by painting over the top of it, either manually or digitally.

Compositing: Two or more separately shot elements combined in post production into one final shot

Sound: Audio effects added in post production, typically all sounds except dialog.

Location: A geographic location used as the backdrop for a shot.

Location (with composite): A geographic location used as the backdrop for a shot where certain elements will be replaced or enhance in post production.

Physical Set: A studio set build to resemble the setting of a shot.

Physical Set (with composite): A studio set build to resemble the setting of a shot where certain elements will be replaced or enhance in post production.

Matte Painting/Photo: An image that will serve as the backdrop for a shot where the action is superimposed in post production.
